Welcome to my site.
Here are some images from my studio and garden in far northern New South Wales.
The paintings on the gallery page are my responses to this lush environment, both coastal and hinterland.
In the “weather series” and “coast” paintings the water cycle is a continuing theme, and I enjoy rendering water in all its forms – the translucency of raindrops, the ephemeral nature of clouds, the flow of rivers and ocean tides. Weather is recorded through different seasons. The opportunities to watch downpours of rain, and storms with their amazing cloud formations and dramatic lighting effects from the shelter of my home are always moments to be savoured and stored in the memory. Beach walks are evening rituals.
In the “window” series I attempt to convey something of the stillness inside and the drama and light outside.
I also feel totally challenged with trying to establish an enticing garden in this subtropical climate, where heliconias and gingers grow so fast and overtake their designated spaces faster than I can create new space for them. And so the “still life” series began. It reflects my modest attempts to create order out of colourful chaos.
The luminous gathering of cloud at dusk
The slash of gold above the mountain ridge
Impossible to hold for more than a second.....
Later, on canvas, a feeble rendering of memory
A futile attempt to catch and hold the moment of glory
Ascertained and felt.....
My arms cannot reach
My eyes cannot still
The movement and flux of the splendour....
Move the brush in homage
Mix slate grey and burnished bronze
And the softest pink
To plant the memory.
